Engine Center Gent will build a new production plant

Engine Center Gent (ECG), a Volvo Cars unit, announced the building of a new Gent based production plant that is scheduled to be operational before the summer of 2003. The € 12 million investment project will create 150 additional jobs and replace the current production unit, also Gent based. The project is part of Volvo’s production expansion, under which the Gent plant will dramatically increase its output. Last November, Volvo Cars announced it would invest € 360 million to increase the capacity of its Gent based factory by 69% with the introduction of 24-hour production and creating 1,400 new jobs. From 2003 the factory will produce the P1 models, which will succeed the Volvo S40 and V40 models, which are currently produced at the NedCar factory in Born, Netherlands. Capacity at the Belgian factory will be increased to 270,000 cars a year from 160,000.
