Melexis steps into automotive CMOS camera chips.

Melexis, the Ypres based and Nasdaq listed developer of advanced integrated semiconductor devices for the automotive industry, announced the recent signature of a contract with an undisclosed automotive system house for the development and the manufacturing of a CMOS optical camera. There will be a growing need for cameras in the automotive market in the near future. Emerging applications are to be found in in-vehicle as well as outside-vehicle applications. The first include, amongst others, optical seat occupant detection and out of position detection. The second use cameras for example for dead angle detection, lane tracking for automatic cruise control and night vision. It is indeed expected that in 5 years' time there could be as many as 5 cameras in a car. No financial terms were available
